A small but meaningful start for VWIDON in 2012

We started sponsoring two little girls in India and Indonesia from last March through www.compassion.com, and just added two more girls from India and Philippines to our account. We know, as a business, it is still an extremely small start of giving back, so we are planning to gradually increase the number of kids we are sponsoring through this wonderful organization in upcoming years. If anyone is interested in sponsoring, please check their website. You don't have to be a Christian to sponsor a child.

There are kids who need a help in the US, too. However, the needs in some areas of the world, like the towns Sathiya, Jenny, Vanshika, and Natalia live are too basic to ignore (Average income of an adult in these towns is the equivalent of only about $80 per month!). As parents of two little girls who take a full advantage of the wonderful resources of Chicago, we feel obliged to send our small but meaningful support to the kids in less fortunate towns, probably not in their love to their kids but in the educational resources and other basic needs for their children.

New photo shoot

Our new photo shoot is coming up. We picked a model from Ford Chicago again since they have the best girls in the area. All the models we worked with so far were very beautiful and professional too. The photo shooting is just to record our intermediate collection, and we will upload some of them here or on our facebook page later on!

Milano Unica

In mid February, Kenneth went to Milano to visit Milano Unica where designers can find the most up-to-date materials by Italian textile mills. We regret not being able to post some photos. Kenneth didn't even have time to take photos as his short trip had to be divided for visiting Milano Unica, showrooms of some textile mills, and his brother's home in a beautiful little town named Erba.

Many Italian textile mills are in a difficult condition these days, according to Massimo who was kind enough to drive Kenneth visiting some of the well known textile mills near Como. He is a friend of Kenneth's sister-in-law. Massimo, born in Como, has been in Italian textile business for more than 20 years. On the way to and from the textile mills, he pointed a couple of mills that went bankrupt recently. It was even more gloomy when the weather was cloudy and foggy enough to hide the beautiful scenery of Como.

On a bright side, though, there are still quite a few competitive textile mills in Italy (and France) who constantly design and produce beautiful, luxurious fabrics and present them to the designers. As long as these textile mills are around, designers will have no problem finding their fabrics to materialize what they wish to create.

Fashion books are great resources for designers as well as fashion students because they are not only textbooks of how garments should be designed and made, but also many times covering wide range of designers in one book, or successfully showing works from the entire period of a designer's career. Here are four books we love to go back often when we need an inspiration, or a time to relax without thinking what we should finish by tomorrow.

This book is absolutely one of our favorites. It is basically made of the runway photo shots from each and every collection of McQueen's, and it would probably be the best way to show the designer's sensational, dramatic works of shapes, colors, materials, and patterns.

Title: Alexander McQueen, Genius of a Generation
Author: Kristin Knox

One great thing about this book is that it really shows details of the incredible works by the designer. This book contains so many interesting images and stories, and would be a great book to own whether you are in fashion industry or not.

Title: Valentino, Themes and Variations
Author: Pamela Golbin

The dresses in this book are from the Brooklyn Museum Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the book has quite a good amount of works by American designers which include Charles James (about 22 wonderful pieces by him).

Title: High Style
Author: the Metropolitan Museum of Art

This book is all about variety. It tries to cover all of the most famed designers we can think of to showcase a brief modern history of the dressmaking. Having said that, this book is very well edited, and it is probably thanks to the vast collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Some of our favorite dresses in this book are the ones by Christian Lacroix, Emanuel Ungaro, John Galliano, and Vivienne Westwood.
